I have tested following in on FreeBSD, KDE 3.3, Xorg 6.8.
Installing fonts:
Download the fonts. Also, you can download AksharYogini Font over here.
Copy all the .ttf files in ~/.fonts.
Run cd ~/.fonts && fc-cache to install the fonts.
Next make sure you have /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/dev in case of FreeBSD. This file may have different path on linux. Run following command to find it:
find / -name "dev" -type f
If you can find that, find out which is the symbols directory by running following command:
find / -type d -name "symbols" | grep xkb
Copy dev to that directory.
Now run following:
setxkbmap -symbols "us(pc105)+dev+group(alt_shift_toggle)"
Press 'Alt+Shift' and devnagari is enabled :).
Keymap:

Tip:
echo 'setxkbmap -symbols "us(pc105)+dev+group(alt_shift_toggle)"' >> ~/.xinitrc
to automatically set the keymap whenever you start X.
Good luck :)
Queries/suggestions are always welcome.

Input methods
for english keyboard addict... more simplefied input method method seems the answer.
SCIM/SKIM has been a bit flaky to install. did you try them by any chance ?
Configuration Issues with SCIM/SKIM
Yes. Tried that. But was not able to use it properly. And seems that typing in unicode layout should be quite faster compared to phonetic :). Well thats my opinion after trying to use phonetic fonts.
I am working with Devnagri
I am working with Devnagri fonts and different softwares from last 6 years. There are mostly 2 ways - Use ISCII keyboard layout, and use phonetic layout. I have worked with C-dac's GIST and ISM office and tested it for Applications like Word processors, Spredsheets and also for databases. C-Dac's softwares are able to convert data from one layout to another and can handle most complex words also. But using them is not so simple compared to Phonetic layouts. Because Software must be installed to use ISCII fonts, complex to type, tim consuming etc. Using phonetic layouts is simple but they can't handle all/complex words. Also there are too many phonetic layouts and there is no convetor available for them.
For this I have developed one new phonetic based layout 'Abhinav'. It can handle most complex words also. Very easy to learn. All these things are tested with online massive data entry in Two Sugar Factories. It works well o both Windows and Linux and no extra software is needed. I am tring to develop an algorithm for conversion and translation using abhinav. You can send me an email so that I can mail the zip file of Abhinav fonts. Also my friend and I have tested Unicode for Website but it is two difficult for Coverson and also for writing complex words.

Running devanagari on Mac OS X
I thought that the Mac would come with pre-installed Devanagari fonts, so was rather surprised that whenever I see something written for devanagari, it appears as some garbled junk. When I clicked on this link, to my pleasant surprise, the tab itself (and the browser bar) carries the pagename correctly displayed, and devanagari appears in various places on the page.
But not in all. For instance, there are 5 active forums today, but I can only read the title of the second one, about stopping those irritating cellphone callers. The rest appear as question marks. The title of the page, while displaying correctly in the tab and browser bar, is replaced by a row of question marks in the body copy.
Am I missing out on some local settings here, or are there some issues in resolving families of fonts?
Which version of Mac OS X
Which version of Mac OS X are you using? Which browser are you using? I am able to use Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.9) perfectly fine with safari. How did you enable the support? You may try 'international' in spotlight. Please note that rendering in firefox is not proper.
